Chapter 8
Is he alive or dead?

Pride slowly opened his eyes. Pain seared through his body every time he moved. His leg was thumping in pain. He then heard footsteps coming near. As soon as Henry saw Pride moving, he rushed over to him. Pride lifted his head and neighed weakly at Henry. Suddenly, they heard a roar of a stallion above them. Their eyes lifted up to see Shadow’s black head looking down at his injured son.
Pride then made a wild cry of pain as he tried to get up. Henry was now close to weeping. Brady had moved into the bush as he saw a few of brumby’s coming up to Season Rock. Shadow called down and was now worried about his son. Ebony came beside him and gasped in horror.
Scarlett saw Brady and charged at him. Brady kicked her back. But Scarlett put up a fight. She was light on her feet but Brady was much stronger. She snarled at him. Brady whined as she saw a foal coming near. She was a mother and he couldn’t hurt her. Arrow was suddenly at Scarlett’s side, snapping and baring his teeth.
Brady stepped backwards from the angry stallion. Henry then helped Pride up. Pride got to his legs and started to slowly walk back up the rocks from which he fell. As soon as he got up, the horses didn’t move as he had a human by his side. Brady took a step forward but Arrow’s snarl kept him back. Shadow took a step forward with a hard face.
Henry gulped and moved closer to Pride. Pride stood up straight his head high but he too moved closer to Henry. Shadow couldn’t believe what was happening. Ebony’s soft nicker stopped him from being outrage. “The human saved our son’s life, Shadow.”
Pride looked at his father and then mother. He saw April at the back. He neighed softly at her and Page. Page neighed and ran up to him before anyone could stop the small filly. Henry gulped again. Pride nuzzled his daughter then Henry. Henry knelt down and slowly put his hand to Page. She sniffed him and then nibbled his hand softly.
April then slowly came forward. Shadow neighed in disbelief. “They’re not our enemies unless we make them, father.” Pride said with gentleness in his voice. Henry heard Pride nicker to the black stallion. He stood up and looked at Shadow as every horse did. Shadow softened and snorted. Henry seemed to sigh with relief.
Brady snorted. Arrow snarled back, making sure Brady wasn’t going anywhere near the herd. Henry looked at Brady and wondered why he had attacked Pride. Pride grunted at Brady, who felt insecure. Henry then slowly walked to Brady. He grabbed his bridle, flipped it over his head and climbed onto the saddle.
Pride neighed softly at Henry. Henry smiled and tipped his hat slightly. He then rode Brady back to the Brumby Hunters where they would be waking up, awaiting to move back to their ranches. Henry smiled sadly but then decided he would stay. Make a small cottage and join the other ranches to make a living.

Chapter 9

It had only been a day since Henry had left Pride and his herd. Pride stood on Season Rock, looking over his herd, but part of his mind was thinking where Henry could be. He neighed sadly at the thought of him leaving. Little hooves stopped beside him. It was his daughter, Page and nephew, Saber. He held his head high, pretending to look at the herd. Then he felt a small, warm nose on his shoulder.
Page was nibbling him. “Father, why do you like man so much?” She asked innocently. Pride sighed. “Not all man is our enemies, young ones. But you need to be careful of which man you can trust. I have hated all man before Henry. Last year he caught me, and then freed me. You saw today what he did. I would probably still be down there if it wasn’t for that kind man.”
Just then Saber said, “Man on foot.” He pointed his nose to where he had seen. Pride stepped forward. Saber was right, it was man on foot. But not just any man. Pride gasped and then started to run down from the rock, down the small hill and towards Henry. Henry was smiling as he saw Pride race to him.
Pride neighed in greeting at Henry as he reached him. Henry hugged his neck as Pride nibbled his shoulder playfully. The herd was startled by the greeting but soon relaxed as Shadow walked up and did the same thing. Pride smiled at the awkward welcome between the man and his father.
Henry looked around at the beautiful brumbies. A few foals poked their heads out from behind their mothers and fathers. He chuckled. He was finally home. Home with the brumbies.
