The Story:
I never thought that life in the city was much different to life in the country. I mean, I’ve never been to the country or forest (for a 12 year old, it’s pretty weird, I know). All my friends tell me it and it is TOTALLY different. The pics of the forest that I see are like the botanical gardens and they’re nice, so the forest is nice too, isn’t it? And the country reminds me of soccer fields.
“Georgia Marvalla!” Mrs Sliphe’s voice rattles my thoughts. I blink in surprise only to see 26 pairs of eyes staring at me.
“Y-yes, Mrs Sliphe?” I manage to cough out the words that were choking me. My best friend snorts at the same time. Mrs Sliphe’s glare flickers towards her. I grin at her and mouth the words ‘thank you’.
“Both of you,” Mrs Sliphe points at Sapphire and I, “detention.”
This isn’t new for Saph and I. We are always getting into trouble because of my day-dreaming. Normally a person would get bored of the same thing over and over, but not us. We like repeating things. Saph stands, pulling me up by the arm.
“Come on,” she says. She flings open the classroom door which is covered in rules about what not to do. Why can’t rules be about what we can do? Or none at all. “Geo,” Saph’s voice rings my ears. I look up, only to find that we are already at the detention room. I guess I’ve memorised how to get here without looking because I’ve been here so much.
Mr Gannon, the relieving teacher looks at Saph and I. He takes over detention sometimes. “Georgia, you have to stop daydreaming. And Sapphire, you really have to stop taking care of everyone else’s things. It’s not school.”
Sapphire lowers her head and smirks, her long black hair covering her face. She tucks it behind her ear on my side so I can see her silent snort. Mr Gannon doesn’t see this and continues. “You’re lucky it’s for only 10 minutes!”
10 minutes later
The bell rings and I push myself up from my desk. Saph sighs and sits back, rocking the chair. It tips backwards slightly with enough force it topples over backwards. Mr Gannon swings around and the crashing noise and his eyes widen.
“Sapphire!” he exclaims. The corners of Saph’s mouth turn up and she lets out another giggle snort and Mr Gannon shakes his bald head. “Girls....” I laugh and we run out of the room.
“We are SO in trouble on Monday,” I giggle. Saph raises a sleek brown eyebrow. “What’s new?”
I shrug and a honk sounds from the car park and I glance at my best friend.
“Gotta go!”
The gravel crunches under my feet and mum swings open the heavy door. A couple of papers are sitting on the seat and Mum shuffles them into place. I chuck my bag into the back and mum is staring at me like she’s desperate to tell me something.
“What?” I ask her. Mum blinks and shakes her head. “Huh?”
I give her an obvious look. “You know what I’m on about.” Her eyes cloud up with regret and she stares through me like I’m a ghost.
Thanks, Ebony.
