Bamboo's Charity Fundraising

Bamboo the Panda Bear is helping to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)!

Bamboo the Panda Bear Thank you to all of you for your generous help in making the WWF fundraiser a big success. Bamboo has advised me that his getting lots of hugs at all the homes he went to and he loves being a part of each and every collectors family. From the desk of the Beanie Master Now, here's a message from our friends at WWF who are using the funds YOU helped collect to save a population of Pygmy Possums on Mt Kosciusko

A big thank you to everyone who purchased Bamboo, the panda bear, one of the new Beanie Kids released last year. Over $30,000 was raised and generously donated by Skansen Giftware to WWF-Australia. The money raised will go towards protecting Australia's plants and animals which face numerous threats such as land clearing, polluted rivers and oceans and the effects of global warming .

For example the changing climate and hotter temperatures means that the environment that many animals are used to living in is changing. If animals cannot adapt to this change quickly they face extinction. In Australia this includes animals that live in areas such as the Australian Alps, on coral reefs and in tropical rainforests where the living conditions are near the upper limit of their temperature range or in areas from which they can't migrate.

For example, in the Australian Alps, the mountain pygmy possum likes to hibernate under snow in winter. However, if the temperature increases by only 1Celsius on average, the pygmy possum is likely to disappear. Less snow will affect their health, how they behave and their food supply.

There are different things we can do to help wildlife adapt to these changes. One of these is building 'buffer zones' which provide a way of moving from one area to another where there is more protection for animals. This is done by planting trees, grasses and bushes to create a suitable environment. It's similar to building a corridor so those animals can leave one area and safely move to a better place to live.
